Canada's Best Communities for Rooftop Solar

Annual sunshine hours are the primary driver of rooftop solar output. More sun means more kilowatt-hours generated per panel, shorter payback periods, and higher lifetime returns. These communities rank highest nationally on solar resource potential.

Scope: Canada Communities ranked: 1,565 Showing: Top 25 nationally Data: ECCC Climate Normals 1991–2020
Alberta and Saskatchewan lead Canada for rooftop solar resource: This ranking uses annual sunshine hours as a proxy for solar conditions — Alberta's Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Calgary dominate, with Saskatoon and Swift Current close behind. Note that multiple FSAs from the same city appear here, as each FSA records similar sunshine measurements. PV yield (kWh/kWp) is a more precise measure of solar output that accounts for irradiance intensity, panel angle optimization, and latitude effects. Sunshine hours provide a directional indicator — communities with 2,500+ hours per year will generally outperform those with 1,800 hours for rooftop solar. In BC, the Okanagan leads, while Victoria outperforms Metro Vancouver despite lower totals than the Prairies. Use our Solar Assessment Tool for address-level PV yield estimates.
